The Stableworker's Reckoning
A fresh groom arrives, introducing himself with a tentative confidence. I assign him the task of mucking out and tidying the horse stalls. Upon completion, he summons me for inspection. Yet, hidden in a shadowy corner, lies a cluster of manure he overlooked. Without hesitation, I press his face into the filth. He stammers apologies, but remorse alone won’t suffice. I compel him to clean my leather riding boots with his tongue—still insufficient. Cracking slaps rain across his cheeks, I spit in his face, and lashes from the jumping whip follow for each lingering dung pile. Finally, he kneels, meticulously gathering the remnants with his bare hands. Lesson learned—this won’t be repeated.
